I haven t seen the film The Dark Crystal. Until today, in fact, I didn t know that was where this little screamy furball thing was from. And until the TV series based on it came out last year, I’d never really heard anyone talk about it. But apparently it was part of the standard
I haven t seen the film The Dark Crystal. Until today, in fact, I didn t know that was where this little screamy furball thing was from. And until the TV series based on it came out last year, I’d never really heard anyone talk about it. But apparently it was part of the standard films made in the 80s to permanently disturb the minds of children, and everyone just swore a pact never to mention it in front of me until that point.
So, I don’t really know what to make of The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics. Who is it for? Are people really invested in these creepy melty-faced elf things, or the obviously evil mutant vulture men? Are there people out there who already knew that the Drenchen Clan are immune to poison, or is that new? Are the podlings an oppressed underclass or just weird joke people who Gelflings sometimes like to, uh, forcibly bathe?
And why is this kinda middling game growing on me?

Lately I find myself listening to a lot of the same music I listened to growing up in the early 90s. I don’t know if it has to do with getting older – I’m turning 32 next week so naturally I’m growing more aware of my inevitable and impending death. Sometimes I wonder whether I’m just trying cocoon myself in the gentle safety of 90s memorabilia instead of having to deal with reality.
Lucky for BonusXP and En Masse Entertainment, that is a can of worms I dare not open. And while I’m stuck here waiting for the nostalgia-infused The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics to hit, at least there’s a nice little gameplay trailer to whet my appetite.

The Dark Crystal is a 1982 fantasy film directed by Jim Henson and Frank Oz, and while its Muppet heritage is unmistakable, it is definitely not a movie about the ongoing adventures of Kermit and co. It tells the Tolkien-ish tale of a long-ago struggle between the Skeksis and the Mystics on the distant world of Thra, which has been riven by a break in a magic crystal. A shard of that crystal has ended up in the hands of a Gelfling, who embarks on a question to return the shard, repair the crystal, and save the world.
All of this is relevant now because En Masse Entertainment, the publisher of Tera, announced today that a strategy-RPG called The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics will be released later this year. The game will actually be based on the upcoming Netflix prequel series, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, with an 80-mission campaign across a diverse range of territories in which the Gelfling "seek to restore light to the world and fulfill the prophecy."
The Gelfing, who aren't exactly heavy hitters in this war, will rely on "guile, planning and cunning" in turn-based battles on dynamic battlefields that will force players to adapt to changing conditions. A New Game Plus mode will offer increased challenges once the main campaign is complete.
"The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics will allow fans to delve further into the history and world of Thra as they conduct multi-layered and evolving tactical battles on the side of the Gelfling against the Skeksis," En Masse director of live services Stefan Ramirez said. "Players will experience living, unpredictable environments that encompasses not only the events and characters of the Netflix series, but new game-exclusive characters, stories, and challenges."
The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics is listed on Steam and expected to be out later this year. If you want to check out the Netflix show, it will debut on August 30.

It’ll be a single player, turn-based SRPG ala Final Fantasy Tactics or Disgaea, and expands on the conflict between the hobbity Gelflings and the vulture-like Skeksis.
