Today we’re stepping a little outside while True: learn() to share the biggest news from the project our team is actively working on right now. It’s called SuperWEIRD. It has a different world, clumsy robots, production chains, and considerably more suspicious goo, but the basic principle may feel familiar: you build a clever system, press the button, and immediately discover several outcomes that were definitely not in the training dataset. https://store.steampowered.com/app/3818770/SuperWEIRD/ For anyone seeing it for the first time, SuperWEIRD is an automation roguelite about building production chains, commanding robots, rebuilding a broken planet with Tetris-like pieces, and trying to stop the Corruption known as Goofy Goo.
SuperWEIRD now has co-op
We’ve just launched our very first proper co-op build. Naturally, everything started falling apart almost immediately. Shortly before release, we discovered that a player could invite themselves into their own co-op session. Which is technically multiplayer, depending on how philosophical you feel about it. We fixed that, fixed quite a few other things, and probably generated several exciting new edge cases for future us to investigate. Now we need to see how co-op behaves outside the carefully controlled environment of our development machines. We’re especially interested in full video playthroughs. Written feedback tells us what went wrong, but recordings help us see where players hesitate, what feels unclear, what unexpectedly works, and which robot has decided to produce results with suspiciously low validation accuracy. Our artist Anya has brought one of the game’s NPCs to life — a character who has already quietly become the project’s little mascot.

while True: learn() taught us that even the smartest system behaves differently once real people start experimenting with it. That lesson is proving extremely useful again — now with co-op, robots, planetary reconstruction, and Goofy Goo added to the dataset.

Second, we’re deep into developing SuperWEIRD and actively playtesting it in the browser. And oh boy — you’ve sent us a lot of comments and feedback. We’re carefully digging through all of it now.

Feedback has always been important to our studio. We’ve tried to stay close to players on Steam, Discord, and across social media. But with this project, we decided to go even further. It basically turned into full-on data-driven development — constant playtests, constant feedback loops, constant iteration.
It was our first time working like this, and honestly… what an experience! At one point, we stretched a single version to 9 weeks instead of the planned 2, just because we couldn’t hit the metrics we needed in playtests. Imagine that!
But thankfully, the era of large-scale quantitative playtests is behind us — and qualitative ones are kicking off in just a few days. On March 9th, we’re hosting a new closed playtest.

We hope that you're having a great Summer Sale, and your Steam library is full of awesome new games (again).
As for us, we've got some exciting news of our own! For one, while True: learn() is expected to become a part of exposition in a hi-tech museum in Antwerpen (that's in Belgium).
Craftomation 101, in turn, is getting a lift-up in the UI/UX department: we've hired professional designer to make the game shine, and she's doing an awesome job:

It appears that a few months have passed without any news from us, so we decided to write this post and share some updates.
First, while True: learn() has reached a formidable number of 6000 reviews on Steam! We're infinitely grateful to you, the players, for your love and attention: could we ever dream that a niche puzzle game like ours could get this big? Well, we certainly did dream about that, but we did not really expect it to happen, and yet here we are. Thank you!
Although the active part of development is now over, we are still supporting the game: the plan for the next update is to improve localizations to all the available languages. Stay tuned for the news!
Second, as you may remember, we launched the spiritual successor of while True: learn() named Craftomation 101. It uses similar node-based gameplay, but this time the programming part is very real: you'll get to write programs for a gang of goofy robots that will be helping you terraform a frozen planet:

On a related matter, Craftomation 101 is made using Defold Engine, which we love very much, because it allows us to create a web-based versions of games in a very easy way - we'd like our games to be playable at schools, which are mostly equipped with Chromebooks these days.
And Defold engine runs on Lua programming language - which turned out to be a very peculiar experience for us! In fact, we wrote a whole article about writing a game on Lua, which made a splash on Reddit and The Hacker News. Since we released while True: learn() back in 2019, machine learning made a huge leap forward. So it only made sense to make the game accessible for more people around the world by adding machine learning translations for certain languages. Because it's the future!



You know how it happens: first, you want to fix a thing or two in an old game. Next, you find yourself adding a bunch of features that you always wanted to add, because reasons. That's exactly what happened two us: 2 major updates in a row within a month, is that too much? Dr. Katz says 'NO!'

It's that frightfully pleasant time of the year again, when we dress up, give out candy and inflict massacre upon pumpkins (sorry, pumpkins!).
