In the wake of Gen.G’s dramatic PGS 9 tournament win, we enlisted the help of PUBG expert reporter Jisooboy to analyse what precisely led to their tournament win! Here’s what they had to say:
[p align="start"]When people think of the greatest organizations in PUBG Esports, a few teams naturally come to mind. Among them is Gen.G Esports, the 2019 PGC champion and a storied organization that has represented PUBG Esports for years. Yet after winning PGC 2019, Gen.G struggled to produce meaningful results. Following a third-place finish at PGI.S 2021, the team failed to win a single title across the PCS ASIA series or any subsequent PGC. Despite multiple rebuilds year after year, its only notable result was a runner-up finish at EWC 2025. Gen.G clearly needed a change.[p align="start"]Perhaps that is why Gen.G entered this year with a different level of ambition. The team signed seoul Cho Gi-yeol and Salute Woo Je-hyeon, both members of the PGC 2023 championship roster, as well as diyy Daniel Noh Noh Eun-woo, who had delivered standout performances for Al Qadsiah. In particular, seoul and Salute had been regarded as one of Korea’s strongest duos, sending expectations among PUBG Esports fans sky-high.[p align="start"]But the result of that major rebuild was disastrous. Gen.G finished only fourth in the domestic PWS, while its chances of qualifying for PGC began to fade. The team missed the Finals four times—at PGS 1, 2, 5, and 7 in 2026—and across 123 PGS matches recorded just seven Chicken Dinners, 3.49 kills per match, and 789 average damage per match. The numbers did not lie. It would not have been an exaggeration to call Gen.G one of the weakest Partner Teams competing in PGS.[p align="start"]Sure enough, Gen.G opened the first PGS Circuit, Circuit 1, by missing the Finals three times in a row. Gen.G was not alone—many teams that had undergone major rebuilds were also struggling to find their footing—but three consecutive Finals misses in Circuit 1 was still a shocking result.[p align="start"]As a Global Partner Team, Gen.G had the advantage of guaranteed participation in the PGS Circuit and more opportunities to accumulate PGS Points. Even so, it was pushed aside by established Partner Teams and strong regional qualifiers, failing not only to break into the PGS top eight but even falling into the bottom tier of the standings. Considering Gen.G’s history on the international stage, it was a deeply disappointing run.[p align="start"]The crisis continued in PGS Circuit 2. Gen.G appeared to be turning things around with a sixth-place finish at PGS 4, only to finish 23rd at PGS 5 and miss the Finals once again. The swings could hardly have been more extreme. The team returned to the Finals at PGS 6, but finished just 13th overall. Without a dramatic turnaround in Circuit 3, direct qualification to PGC was becoming almost impossible to imagine.[p align="start"]In my view, there were two main reasons for Gen.G’s struggles. First, the team had not had enough time to build chemistry. Second, communication was not yet smooth. Individual skill was never the issue. Every player already had extensive international experience and an impressive career behind them.[p align="start"]Meanwhile, the 2026 PUBG Esports season began with PGS. Many teams had rebuilt their rosters in January 2026, and because the opening competition was an international event rather than a domestic league, the level of opposition was extremely high. In roughly two months, teams had to establish their approach to macro play, understand each new teammate’s tendencies, sharpen the precision of information sharing, and raise the level of their teamplay in fights.[p align="start"]For newly signed diyy in particular, the language barrier made it difficult to exchange information and coordinate opinions smoothly with his teammates. It was something that had surfaced across tournaments, scrims, personal streams, and Ranked play, and it did not look like an issue that could be solved overnight. Beyond the differences in how overseas and Korean players make comms, it is difficult to completely learn every in-game callout, terrain reference, and piece of slang in just a few months. A building called ‘Palgakjeong’ in Korea, for example, may be called ‘Wizard Tower’ overseas. Depending on the map, there can be hundreds of callouts like these.[p align="start"]As these issues accumulated, comms mistakes became more frequent and information took longer to relay, inevitably leading to repeated teamkills and in-game errors. While Gen.G worked through that process, rival teams steadily built their own careers and collected prize money. Gen.G could do little but watch from the sidelines.[p align="start"]After enduring all of those difficulties, signs of change finally began to appear for Gen.G in PGS Circuit 3. The team finished only 11th overall at PGS 8, but many of the issues that had been repeatedly pointed out were beginning to improve. The result itself was not strong, yet the quality of Gen.G’s play had changed significantly. Cleaner comms, pre-planned setups, and more precise approaches began to take shape. As the team reorganized its positions and role order, both survival time and the rate at which it secured Placement Points began to rise.[p align="start"] [p align="start"]PGS 8 Finals DAY 1 MATCH 1 — Erangel[p align="start"]Looking at Gen.G’s Chicken Dinner in Finals DAY 1 MATCH 1 on Erangel, the team focused on keeping all four players alive by denying routes other teams could use and gathering information before winning the decisive fight. The closing sequence still showed some instability. Gen.G held the stronger position, but when information about each player’s situation was not shared quickly enough, dangerous moments like this could still occur. Even so, the match helped Gen.G sharpen its form as the tournament progressed.[p align="start"] [p align="start"]PGS 8 Finals DAY 2 MATCH 2 — Erangel[p align="start"]The second highlight was how well the revised roles worked in tournament play. Gen.G’s typical losing pattern had often looked like this: ① Salute looks for an angle to hunt another team → ② if the opponent responds well or Gen.G cannot execute quickly as a team, Salute is neutralized → ③ BeaN and diyy try to help, only to get knocked in succession or draw a third party → ④ Seoul makes a big play at the end, but the team still goes down soon after.[p align="start"] [p align="start"]Gen.G’s Typical Losing Pattern[p align="start"]Over time, however, the revised positioning and order changed that pattern. When Gen.G needed to look for a third-party angle or take the initiative and eliminate an opponent first, Seoul moved to the front, combining detailed reads of the situation with smooth, persistent pressure. BeaN and diyy acted as the glue in the middle, while Salute surveyed the wider battlefield from the backline and took responsibility for the final calls. The new structure began to pay off.[p align="start"]The role changes improved Gen.G’s overall survival time and Placement Point output. At the PGS 6 Grand Finals, Gen.G averaged only 1.4 Placement Points per match; by the PGS 9 Finals, that figure had risen to 3.9. The team’s average survival time also increased from 20 minutes 53 seconds to 22 minutes 38 seconds. Salute’s combat numbers, which had dipped somewhat after taking on the main IGL role, also began to recover. Team average damage jumped sharply from 672 to 980.[p align="start"]In a way, perhaps every problem Gen.G had faced ultimately came down to time. Salute, for example, moved from an attacking role into responsibility for the team’s calls, giving him far more to process and manage and preventing him from playing at his best. BeaN, serving as the glue of the team, needed above all to become a stable, mistake-free presence with the ability to survive tenaciously—and it took time to fully develop that role. Seoul was always elite statistically, but those numbers had largely been individual. There were moments when he needed to step forward before the team began to collapse. diyy, meanwhile, needed to reshape the entire style of play he had been accustomed to.[p align="start"]Gen.G’s strengths are now clear. The team had always built good scenarios for attacking opponents, but it lacked the finishing power and clearly defined roles needed to complete them. Now Seoul and Salute, two of the best players in the world, have fully settled into their respective roles, while BeaN’s survival instincts—honed over years in the PUBG scene—have matured into a major strength. Even diyy, who had repeatedly made costly mistakes, played the biggest role in delivering Gen.G the championship in the final match of the PGS 9 FINAL.[p align="start"]Salute’s Read of the Situation + Seoul’s Composed Finish[p align="start"]BeaN’s Brilliant Placement Defense[p align="start"]diyy’s Winning Play for the Championship[p align="start"]Of course, while this column was being written, it was announced that diyy had ended his contract and transferred to Team Liquid on August 25, 2026. Gen.G then announced another rebuild by signing taemin Kang Tae-min on August 27, 2026, one of the key players from the PGC 2019 championship roster. There is a chance that the gaps discussed above could emerge once again, but every player on Gen.G has the experience and skill to fill them, so there may be little reason for serious concern.[p align="start"]Closing[p align="start"]994 days.[p align="start"]That is how long Korean PUBG Esports had gone quiet on the international stage since its PGC 2023 championship. Gen.G, too, had to endure repeated failures and rebuilds while searching for a way back to the top. The players changed roles, learned to understand one another’s play, and endured countless rounds of trial and error before finally becoming one complete team. In the end, what made Gen.G a top team again was not a single signing or one special strategy. It was the time required to understand one another, the experience gained by enduring failure, and the determination of players who refused to give up until the very end.[p align="start"]After quietly enduring failure after failure, Gen.G finally lifted an international trophy. In doing so, one of PUBG Esports’ most storied organizations proved itself once again: a great team is not simply made—it is completed only after surviving countless failures. But since PGS 9 is the Circuit 3 Final, there’s a twist - the top performers in the PGS 7 & 8 Winner’s stage receive Advantage Points which are added to their standings at the start of the respective Final Stage.

Survival Stage: August 20th
Seeding for PGS 9 is based on teams’ performance in PGS 7 and 8. The Top 8 teams from those tournaments will bypass the Survival Stage and go directly to the Finals. Everyone else will duke it out in the 16-team Survival Stage on Thursday, in a last-chance dash to make it to the ultimate PGS Finals lobby. Only the Top 8 can advance from the Survival Stage!
Grand Finals: August 21st - 23rd
A no-holds-barred three day BO15 fight for the PGS Champion title. It’s the classic SUPER format you know and love - the team with the most points at the end of the third match day will be crowned the Champion. But since PGS 9 is the Circuit 3 Final, there’s a twist - the top performers in the PGS 7 & 8 Winner’s stage receive Advantage Points which are added to their standings at the start of the respective Final Stage.

I brought a famous quote to kick things off. In PUBG, players land with bare hands, but the outcome is ultimately determined by the choices they make. On the perilous boundary between life and death, players have always carved out their own destiny through those crucial choices.
Numerous factors are considered when making these decisions, but the most critical of all is undoubtedly the Blue Zone. Whether you are a casual player or a pro, preferred drop zones or cities may shift depending on the flight path (plane trajectory). However, no one can predict where the Blue Zone will shrink once everyone hits the ground. Thus, navigating the Blue Zone has always been a realm of experience and intuition, never of absolute certainty.
Particularly, the classic Blue Zone settings we were all accustomed to underwent a massive overhaul with the Update 42.1 Patch on June 16, 2026. The durations of the early and final phases were shortened, the overall size of the safe zones was reduced, and the Blue Zone damage scale shifted from a distance-based system to a cumulative time-spent system. Most importantly, the land-prioritization algorithm that assisted safe zone generation was completely removed.
Due to this monumental shift, teams that traditionally relied on "circle-reading" and strategic macro-play as their primary strengths have struggled significantly. Strategic powerhouses like DN SOOPERS, Team Vitality, and Team Falcons were pushed to the brink, finding themselves relegated from the Group Stage to the Survival Stage. Although they eventually clawed their way into the Final Stage, none of them walked away with results they could truly be satisfied with.
This crisis was not unique to macro-heavy teams either. Even squads renowned for their raw skirmishing power and gunplay, such as T1 and Natus Vincere, failed to even qualify for the Final Stage. While we witnessed numerous moments where players were picked off while rotating under time pressure, the shrink in the initial Blue Zone's area also created clear pressure points where teams were forced to make high-stakes decisions much faster than before.
Specifically, as the Phase 4 Blue Zone—which heavily dictates the momentum of any match—introduced a higher degree of randomness, the historical circle-prediction data used by many teams has been completely rewritten. Let's look at a concrete example.
The Blue Zone behavior we previously knew is illustrated in Attachment 1. Especially when the circle pulled over water or rivers, it was essential for teams to analyze the ratio of land—which had a higher probability of pulling the next circle away from the water—to predict Phase 4 and preemptively seize high-tier compounds or defensive ridges. In that meta, certain spots were classified as highly reliable, go-to strongholds for mid-to-late game macro, earning them the nickname "Science" because teams could blind-drop or rotate into them without a second thought.
However, with this Blue Zone reform patch, it is safe to say those "scientific rules" have vanished. Formulaic circle patterns have disappeared, and highly volatile, unpredictable circles have emerged. Consequently, the strategic value of early-centering or rushing to secure a central compound has been somewhat diluted. As shown in Attachment 2, despite the heavy presence of water, a massive portion of the sea remains engulfed inside the active safe zone.
Match Survival Statistics (At the 10-Minute Mark)
Furthermore, as the early-phase Blue Zone times were cut short and their areas reduced, players' rotation paths frequently overlapped. This has had a direct impact on the match survival rate. Below is the compiled data:
GS: Group Stage / WS: Winners Stage / SS: Survival Stage / FS: Final Stage / GF: Grand Final
To conduct this data analysis, I reviewed every single match across all previous PGS iterations, manually counting and recording the number of active players surviving at the exact 10-minute mark.
While the current sample size under the new Blue Zone settings is still somewhat limited, the rule change has clearly driven a statistically significant drop in early-game survival numbers. Overall, the survival rate has decreased. Notably, we observed a massive drop-off in survivor counts during the Final Stage and on the map Rondo. Given the high-stakes nature of the Final Stage compared to the Group, Winners, or Survival Stages, combined with Rondo's incredibly vast terrain, we saw several teams in PGS 7 opt for highly aggressive, early rotations or make high-risk, high-reward gambles.
This survival drop was not uniform across all stages and maps. By stage, the Group Stage actually saw a slight increase in survival, while the Winners and Survival Stages showed a minor drop of about 2 players. However, in the Final Stage, the survival rate plummeted by 5.4 players. This data suggests that the new Blue Zone doesn't simply force early engagements across the board; rather, its impact is amplified dramatically on specific maps and during higher-stakes stages.
Of course, a holistic analysis must account for several other variables. We must examine qualitative factors that cannot be captured by raw data alone—such as the specific map pool, participating team rosters, team-specific tactical playstyles and tendencies, hot-drop/landmark conflicts, starting flight paths, Phase 1 circle shapes, and stage-specific lobby dynamics. While PGS 7 is the only tournament played under the updated Blue Zone rules so far, we will undoubtedly secure more reliable data and stronger statistical significance once PGS 8 and PGS 9 are concluded.
PUBG Esports athletes are constantly fighting for survival, chasing the clock under extreme pressure. At times, they are forced into unavoidable compromises, and they often fall victim to incredibly unforgiving circle shifts. Nonetheless, the beauty of PUBG Esports is that these players will adapt, and today's defeated squad can easily become tomorrow's champion. Developer’s Comment
Until now, players have been able to create their own modes through the UGC Alpha feature in Custom Match. However, playing those creations with others required creators to gather people themselves and invite them to a Custom Match, making it difficult for their modes to reach a broader audience.
It was also difficult to browse modes created by other players, which made community-created content less accessible overall.
With this update, the feature is being expanded into PUBG: Playgrounds. Popular and entertaining player-created modes will be selected and featured on a dedicated page, where players can jump straight into them through matchmaking. Our goal is to make PUBG: Playgrounds easier to access and use, while giving creators even more motivation to build great modes.
The modes available through PUBG: Playgrounds will be updated monthly. We plan to source modes through a variety of channels and continue introducing new creations with each update.
■ Information for Mode Creators
How Modes Are Added to PUBG: Playgrounds
Direct mode submissions are not currently supported. Instead, the developers will select modes based on gameplay data collected from Custom Matches.
We will provide a separate announcement should the submission or registration process change in the future.
Play your mode in Custom Match — The more often your mode is played in Custom Match, the more gameplay data it will accumulate.
Developer review and selection — The developers will monitor a range of gameplay data, including total playtime and average participation rate, to identify popular modes.
Addition to PUBG: Playgrounds — Modes that meet the required criteria based on monitoring results will be added to the PUBG: Playgrounds, allowing them to reach more players through matchmaking.
In addition to selection based on gameplay data, modes may also be sourced and added through other channels, including community-created mode contests.
Mode Selection Restrictions
Even popular modes may be excluded from PUBG: Playgrounds if any of the following conditions apply.
Grounds for exclusion from PUBG: Playgrounds:
The map itself contains content that violates the Rules of Conduct or the PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS Mods Policy.
The mode contains a critical bug that prevents normal gameplay.
The mode contains inappropriate text.
A mode may remain available after the relevant content is removed from its description if the description contains:
Links or website addresses used for commercial purposes, including advertising, sponsorships, or promotions.
Links to personal social media accounts or personal websites.
Information about a clan that the creator belongs to or operates.
Any other content that violates the Rules of Conduct or the PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS Mods Policy.
Things to Keep in Mind When Creating a Mode
Custom Match (Create) is available only to BATTLEGROUNDS PLUS accounts.
If no separate thumbnail is registered, an in-mode screenshot will automatically be used as the mode’s thumbnail.
Setting appropriate primary and secondary tags will help more players discover your mode.
If a community-created mode is selected and added to PUBG: Playgrounds, certain settings, such as the score limit or number of rounds, may be adjusted to ensure stable gameplay.

(PC) PUBG: Playgrounds
The upcoming August Update will introduce PUBG: Playgrounds, a dedicated hub for community-created modes.
You can access it through PUBG: Playgrounds under the Play menu.
Browse the available modes at a glance, select the one you want, and start matchmaking right away.
PUBG: Playgrounds will be available on PC.
Page Overview
Main Page
When you enter the PUBG: Playgrounds menu, the main page will display a list of all currently available modes.
You can view each mode’s name, primary tag, and thumbnail. Hovering over the information icon will display the following details:
Mode name / Creator name
Primary and secondary tags
Maximum number of players / Maximum team size
Page sections
New: Displays recently added modes in a randomized order.
This section will not appear when the service first launches. It will become available as more modes are added over time.
Recently Played: Displays modes you have played in PUBG: Playgrounds, with the most recently played modes shown first.
All: Displays all currently available modes in a randomized order.
Search and filters: Search by mode name or creator name, and filter modes by primary tag.
Selecting the Create button will take you to the Custom Match room creation screen.
Create is available only to BATTLEGROUNDS PLUS accounts.

Matchmaking
After selecting a mode, you can begin matchmaking from its details page.
A matchmaking session will remain active for up to 1 hour and 30 minutes.
The session duration may be changed in the future.
When switching between a community-created mode and Normal or Ranked Mode, the party may be automatically disbanded if the number of party members exceeds the maximum player count supported by the mode you are switching to.
To start a match directly through Custom Match, select Go to Custom Match or Create. (A BATTLEGROUNDS PLUS account is required. The preset, map, and maximum player count cannot be changed.)
Tags
Tags have been introduced to make it easier to categorize, discover, and search for modes.
Primary tag: One required
Secondary tags: Zero to two may be selected (Primary tag-specific secondary tags / Shared secondary tags)

The modes available in PUBG: Playgrounds are player-created content and are not official PUBG content. Due to the nature of community-created content, unexpected bugs may occur during play. If a critical bug is identified, access to the affected mode may be restricted.
You must agree to the PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS Mods Policy to use features such as Create to set up or join Custom Matches featuring player-created modes. However, matchmaking through PUBG: Playgrounds is available even if you have not agreed to the policy.
