On April 21, 1918, the greatest ace of World War I was shot down. 100 years later, the question of who killed the German ace has never been conclusively settled.
Captain Roy Brown was leading a flight of eight Sopwith Camels over the Somme, when they spotted a group of Fokker Triplanes attacking a pair of R.E.8 observation planes. Wagging his wings for his fellows to follow, Brown dived into the fray. Among the Fokkers, was an all-red Triplane.
In the ensuing dogfight, a young Canadian, Wilford May was flying his first combat patrol. He became entangled with a couple of Albatros D.Vs, and was quickly overwhelmed.
Richthofen noticed the overmatched Canadian, and gave chase. May began evasive maneuvers after the Baron's initial burst. He and his German pursuer screamed along just above the ground, the Triplane steadily gaining.
Brown noticed May's plight. He realized his boyhood friend was doomed- unless he could help. Diving in at full speed, he swept in behind the Fokker and fired a distant desperate burst.
At the same time, Australian ground troops opened fire at the red Triplane.
The Fokker crashed in no-man's land. When its pilot did not move, several Australians rushed out, took hold of the aircraft and dragged it to a safe place. At first they could not see why the Triplane had crashed. It was unscathed except for some damaged landing gear. Then one of them noticed a bloodstain on the pilot's jacket, and saw that one bullet had pierced his chest. Examining his papers, the soldiers were awed to see that he was indeed Manfred von Richthofen.
Captain Roy Brown was given credit for shooting down the Red Baron, but who knows who actually fired the bullet that killed him? Some historians believe it was the soldiers on the ground.
We may never know.

Hello Everyone!
Back in 1990, at Dynamix, we built Red Baron. Our goal was to make something more than a game, more than a “flight sim” -- a time machine so that players could experience history.
Getting flight characteristics was important, but equally important was to model the personalities and flying styles of the famous aces of the war. Likewise, we wanted to present a deep and accurate history of the war. For example, aircraft introduced in the player’s campaign reflect the actual experience of the pilots in WWI. In April of 1917, the Germans introduced the technologically superior Albatros D.I and D.II, armed with twin machine guns. As a player in the campaign playing a British pilot, this is a really challenging period - just as it was for the real pilots. Playing a German pilot, this is an exciting time because you get to fly an aircraft that is vastly superior to anything your adversaries have.
After Red Baron, the Aces team, as we called ourselves, went on to release Aces of the Pacific and Aces Over Europe. Then it was time for a sequel to Red Baron. Red Baron 3D (originally released as Red Baron II, and after a major upgrade, renamed Red Baron 3D) carried all the core values of the original, but included a more comprehensive campaign, multiplayer, a higher fidelity flight model, and of course modern graphics (for the time).
Both Red Baron and Red Baron 3D went on to become both commercial and critical successes, and to this day remain the most highly regarded WWI flight sims. Newer games have since been released with modern graphics, but the level of historical depth in Red Baron remains unmatched.
When we left Dynamix, we never expected to be involved with the product again.
In 2008, I was working with a new publisher, and out of the blue, suddenly, unexpectedly, I was offered the chance to acquire all the rights to Red Baron. What a strange twist of cosmic karma. We had completely let go of Red Baron when leaving Dynamix. Then, like some crazy boomerang, Red Baron came flying back -- a boomerang in the shape of a red fokker triplane.
Well, that's the story of why we are now able to bring classic Red Baron and Red Baron 3D to all of you here on Steam. I hope you enjoy them.
Tally Ho!
